About the artist: Massimo Bartolini (b. 1962, Cecina, Italy) makes sculptures and large-scale immersive installations that change space and our experience of it. Although his work encompasses other media such as photography, drawing and performance. Bartolini’s ‘studioworks’, featured for the first time in his exhibition at The Fruitmarket Gallery, are not maquettes or models for larger works, but things that help him think as he makes them. They are sculptures, drawings and photographs incorporating or responding to everyday objects, unusual found objects and elements of chance. Bartolini has spoken of his aeroplane drawings as being like a ‘technical drawing in reverse’, in which a paper aeroplane is firstly made and then unfolded and each of the lines, whether purposeful or a result of the process of making it, is then drawn over or underlined to create a blueprint-like drawing of itself.
