The Making Matters schools’ programme works long-term with six local primary, secondary and special schools to integrate contemporary art into the Curriculum. Artists work closely with teachers to develop the right themes and methods for introducing pupils to our exhibitions and commissions, empowering them to experiment with ideas and make their own art. The programme has been running since 2016 and works with Drummond Community High School, Pilrig Park School, Prospect Bank School, Royal Mile Primary School, St Mary’s RC Primary School and St Thomas of Aquin’s RC High School.
The Fruitmarket’s SmART Thinking Schools Programme sits within the gallery’s multi-strand Community Engagement programme and is a new innovative learning programme that aims to help close the attainment gap in schools through arts and creative learning, supporting children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to reach their potential.
SmART Thinking delivers creative work with schools in Pilton and Muirhouse, delivered in partnership with Craigroyston Community High School and St David’s RC Primary School.
The Making Matters and SmART thinking programmes lead to an annual exhibition that celebrates pupils’ work.
