Manipulate Festival 2024 invite artists and audiences to discuss the potentials and limitations of the words and visual languages we draw on when making visual theatre – whether that’s puppetry, physical theatre, dance, circus or screen-based animation.

This roundtable focused on dramaturgy and language will be facilitated by Lucy Ireland and Jim Manganello from Scotland-based dance theatre company Shotput, alongside Dawn Taylor, the Artistic Director and CEO of Manipulate Arts, as well as additional artist contributors still to be confirmed.

Throughout this artist-led discussion we will be encouraged to think together around questions such as – When does text become too much text? What might the role of poetry be in visual storytelling? When do we need words to make sense of things dramaturgically? How might poetic description be a useful creative tool through which to consider creative and practical access? When do we rely too heavily on words instead of using the body, objects, or other visual, sensory, and atmospheric languages to portray more meaning?
