Spatial Awareness: Zine Launch

Saturday 26 October, 2019 at 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

A zine by: Alexandre Coates, Danya Hu, Dila Yalman, Duncan Jones, Enkuush Mergen, Frances Driscoll, Gemma Gorton, Isabel Madden, Jemma Third, Jinling Wu, Luke Jones, Lumai Yeoman, Marlow Bushman, Melina Maiworm, Oliver Tao, Pei-Fen Hsieh, Yuxuan Geng.

Spatial Awareness is a new zine that explores relationships with space, art and architecture. Each page contains a piece created by different artists as part of The Fruitmarket Gallery’s Fresh Fruit programme. Artists were initially motivated by the current redevelopment and refurbishment of the Fruitmarket’s Market Street site. The zine collects a series of insights into the artist’s personal experiences with art, architecture and the spaces that surround them.

Through drawing, collage, writing and poetry Spatial Awareness explores the sometimes challenging relationships between people and spaces. Expect insights into the purpose and ownership of space, feminism and architecture, safe spaces, accessible spaces, how buildings make you feel, how spaces hold memories of what happened in them, and how architecture invokes associations across different cultural festivals.

A limited edition of 120, Spatial Awareness can be purchased on the night and will be on sale at Bookmarket thereafter. Come along to meet the artists and find out more about their work.

Zines are small self-made publications. Quick and cheap to produce, they have a radical underground history where anything goes and different voices can be heard. Fresh Fruit have worked on the zine in collaboration with the Edinburgh Zine Library and Out of the Blueprint over the last six weeks. The programme has included visits to recently redeveloped rts and cultural spaces in Edinburgh to look at their buildings and exhibition programmes – Collective and Edinburgh Printmakers – and an exclusive peek at the Fruitmarket’s building development in progress.

The zine has been risograph printed at Out of the Blueprint. This is an eco-friendly print process with a unique aesthetic. Invented in Japan in the 1980s, it’s popular with graphic designers, artists and illustrators.

Fresh Fruit is The Fruitmarket Gallery’s peer-led programme for young people aged 16-25 to work together and with artists to make and share art. For more information on the programme see
