SmART Thinking is a new, innovative education programme that aims to help close the attainment gap in schools through arts and creative learning, supporting children and young people to reach their potential. St David’s RC Primary School and Craigroyston Community High School took part in a CPD (Continuing Professional Development) session for teachers; a class visit to the exhibition Emma Hart, BANGER; and a series of practical workshops in school working with Hannah Ayre, an artist who specialises in light art and ceramics. The pupils worked with Hannah exploring ideas inspired by the London-based artist Emma Hart, whose work was on show at The Fruitmarket Gallery from November 2018 – February 2019.

Do You Really Know Us? celebrates the creativity of 95 young people aged ten to thirteen and includes work made by P6 and P7 pupils from St David’s RC Primary School and S1 young people from Craigroyston Community High School. The pupils generated a huge amount of artwork during this schools’ project including: suspended UV drawings, speech bubbles, ceramic tiles, ceramic pots, large-scale action paintings and films.

At the far end of the upper gallery four large scale, colourful paint splattered canvases dominate the space and take inspiration from action painting, a style of painting in which paint is spontaneously dribbled, splashed or smeared onto the canvas. The paintings Big Bang and Splat were created by throwing clay pinch pots filled with fluorescent powder paint onto canvas. The process was filmed to create two short films: The Clay Bang and Respect the Clay Laws. Pupils from St David’s RC School created Ooops Upside Our Heads, fifty small-scale ceramic pots decorated with a range of brightly coloured glazes in glorious patterns which sit proudly on shelves.

All of the SmART Thinking creative activity links into the Curriculum for Excellence and aims to support teachers and pupils to make learning through art fun and relevant to the development of key core skills.

The Fruitmarket Gallery is grateful to have received funding from The Ernest Cook Trust, Baillie Gifford and The William Grant Foundation for the SmART Thinking Schools Programme.
