Exhibition Preview: VERAMUSEMENT 9-2-5

Wednesday 21 February, 2018 at 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Launch Wed 21 Feb, 5–7pm.
Continues Thu 22 – Sun 25 Feb, 11am–6pm.

Joe Coghill is a multi-disciplinary artist, musician and experimental publisher based in Edinburgh. His practice incorporates sound, video, performance, social sculpture, facilitation and media distribution. Over the last six years he has been researching, archiving and creating new work exploring the life, influence and oeuvre of iconoclastic No-Wave outsider artist John Margotti.

For this installation, Coghill will be re-imagining Margotti’s troublesome 1988 New York exhibition – VERAMUSEMENT 9-2-5 – by enacting a series of interventions and durational performances within the gallery. These will reflect on the concept of ‘Veramusment’, a term coined by Henry Flynt, meaning ‘approximately pure recreation’.

Through a selection of artworks and ephemera, the installation will give glimpses into the life and character of John Margotti, who was apparently involved in a diverse selection of creative/disruptive projects and artist-led initiatives during the 1970s, ‘80s and early ‘90s. These ranged from the illegal bootlegging and distribution of cassette tapes with a loose collective of artists who went by the name ‘Infinity-nineteen’, to face-melting sonic performances in which Margotti and his band ‘Invisible Maggot’ used industrial machinery to create a noise so ferocious in amplitude it is said to have made noses bleed. The rich historic tapestry woven by this installation gradually unravels as we pull at its threads. Who is John Margotti?
