Allan Cameron Book Launch: A Woman’s War Against Progress
Thursday 28.09.23. 6.30–8pm. Free. Book via Eventbrite
Join us as we launch Allan Cameron’s new book A Woman’s War Against Progress published by Vagabond Voices. The book follows the plight of the fictional Surelikud people in Siberia. Cameron says that ‘The idea for A Woman’s War Against Progress was suggested by a programme on Radio Four which discussed the fate of the reindeer herders of Tuva, a Russian federal republic, whose life has been destroyed since the fall of the Soviet Union. We tend to ignore the evidence that the various iterations of progress appear to have caused more misery than the ways of life they replaced. With this novel I am trying to demonstrate how completely dysfunctional and mendacious our own societies are.’ The book’s central character confronts the personal costs of political activism and questions our ability to mould our future rationally and morally, whilst also suggesting that we have no choice but to attempt precisely that.
Allan Cameron was born in 1952, grew up in Nigeria and Bangladesh, and currently lives between Italy and Glasgow. He has translated 26 books into English from Italian. This is his fourth novel.
