Advice for Our Times is a day of advice and information at The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh where lawyers and organisations will share their knowledge about immigration, benefits, housing and your legal rights in terms of Scottish Law.
With the enormous changes to legal aid, immigration, housing and the benefits system that are taking place, this drop-in event will offer you the chance to learn more about your rights and will offer practical advice to people on how they can access help with these issues.
There will be refreshments, activities, presentations, talks and discussions throughout the event:
What is on offer:
• Free Lothian Buses Daytickets – just bring your bus ticket and we will reimburse you
• A warm and welcoming place to get friendly advice
• Legal advice talks from lawyers
• Information stalls including:
– One Day Without Us – Shelter
– The Rock Trust
• Advice leaflets on: housing, debt, immigration, EU citizen’s rights and benefits
• Free soup, coffee, tea and biscuits
Translators are available, let us know in advance what language you require translated and we will match you with a translator.
CHAI Edinburgh is a charity that supports people living across Edinburgh and the Lothians.
Cyrenians is a charity that supports people excluded from family, home, work or community.
One Day Without Us is a national day of action on 17 February 2018, celebrating migrants and migration in the UK.
Shelter is a charity that works to alleviate the distress caused by homelessness and bad housing.
The Rock Trust works with young people between the ages of 16–25 who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
Drop in for advice on housing, managing debt, immigration, EU citizen’s rights and benefits advice.
Invisible Edinburgh will host a free Walking Tour starting at the Fruitmarket.
Talk: Kate Laverty and the University of Strathclyde Law Clinic Kate and her team will outline what kind of free advice Law Clinics offer.
We are offering free soup for all
Sarah Hoey will demystify the immigration system.
Talk: Laura Dunlop QC. A brief introduction of the work of the Faculty of Advocates in Scotland.
