Creative Access and Inclusion

Fruitmarket champions the rights of people with Protected Characteristics (under the Equality Act 2010).

Age
Disability
Gender reassignment
Marriage and civil partnership
Pregnancy and maternity
Race
Religion or belief
Sex
Sexual orientation

Alongside these, we also recognise other areas of potential discrimination that are not listed in the 2010 Equality Act, such as neurodiversity, paternity, menopause, socio-economic background, parenting and caring responsibilities. We take an intersectional approach to our work, to ensure that diverse audiences are represented in our organisation.

We seek to hold Fruitmarket open as a space for artistic expression and peaceful dialogue, discussion and dissent; a place for encounter and exchange that might contribute to international understanding. We want inequalities and injustice to be recognised and addressed in our programmes and operations. As a cultural institution, we understand the need for people – artists, audiences, staff – to hold, express and act on political views. We provide a platform for events that raise awareness and understanding of international situations as they become important to the communities we reach.

In May 2026 we reframed our ‘Equalities, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy’ as a ‘Creative Access and Inclusion Strategy’ in order to reflect our commitment to understanding and learning from the creative possibilities of access and inclusion.

The new strategy can be found here

As a Plus Tate member, we use Plus Tate’s Creative Access Toolkit to inform our work.
