The Romantic Spirit in German Art 1790-1990

This monumental exhibition of German art spanned 200 years, tracing the development of Romantic themes and ideas from the first flowering of Romanticism to its continuing relevance. The exhibition was organised by the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, and the Hayward Gallery, London, in association with the Fruitmarket Gallery and with the assistance of the Nationalgalerie, Berlin.

The exhibition was shown at the Royal Scottish Academy, with art made after 1945 shown at The Fruitmarket Gallery.
