The Mirror & the Lamp

19.07.86 – 31.08.86

For the Commonwealth Games and the International Festival the gallery presented a thematic exhibition, which brought together the work of over a dozen artists from Britain, Europe and America. The exhibition sought to bring together work that elicited ‘the involvement of the viewer by means of mirrors and room installations’ exploring ‘the ways in which contemporary artists portray themselves and others’ (Fruitmarket exhibition guide, 1986). The title of the exhibition referred ‘to two distinct views of the human mind: as a mirror reflecting the world and as a lamp illuminating it’ (Fruitmarket exhibition guide, 1986).

Artists: Christian Boltanski, Richard Artschwager, Marcel Duchamp, Giulio Paolini, Gerhard Richter, Helen Chadwick, James Coleman, Tony Cragg, Jiri Georg Dokoupil, David Salle, Cindy Sherman, Ulay, Marina Abramović, and Gilbert & George.

Toured to ICA, London.
