Night Walk For Edinburgh

Night Walk for Edinburgh
Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller
25 July – 25 August 2019

This year The Fruitmarket Gallery teamed up with Edinburgh International Festival to present Night Walk for Edinburgh, a brand new video walk for Edinburgh from internationally renowned Canadian artists Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller.

The image of the street comes up on the iPod screen. It appears that it has been shot in the exact location that you are standing in, almost as if it is in real time. A figure walks past on the video as another passes by in the real world, the two realities aligning. The sounds from the headphones are startlingly three- dimensional, further merging the two worlds in front of you. A female voice close behind you says: ‘I think we should get started. Walk with me…’

Following Cardiff’s voice and walking in her footsteps, you are led through the backstreets of the Edinburgh’s Old Town, unravelling a disjointed tale – part game-playing, part surrealistic poetry, perhaps even a murder mystery – layered with history, invention and memories.

Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller are acclaimed throughout the world for their compelling, beguiling, almost magical video walks, which draw you into a world they create alongside your own. The artists identified Edinburgh as one of only a very few cities in which they wanted to make a video walk when they were in the city preparing their phenomenally successful 2008 Fruitmarket exhibition The House of Books has no Windows.

This work was commissioned by the Fruitmarket and is now part of the Gallery’s permanent collection. It is being restaged from 16 Nov 2019 – 31 January 2020 as part of Edinburgh’s Christmas and Hogmanay celebrations. Book now.

New Book

Night Walk for Edinburgh £20
This book was put together during the making of Night Walk for Edinburgh, 2019. Layering together production photographs, video stills, scripts and shooting instructions, and with a new text looking at Night Walk for Edinburgh in the context of the artists’ other recent walks, it offers a glimpse into Cardiff and Miller’s unique process.
