New French Painting

30.06.84 – 28.07.84

Artists: Jean-Michel Alberta, Pierre Antoniucci, Jean-Charles Blais, Rémi Blanchard, Francois Boisrond, Robert Combas, Vincent Corte, Bernard Frize, Gérard Garouste, Denis Laget, Jean-Luc Poivret and Georges Rousse.

Selected by Jérôme Sans ‘New French Painting’ provided the first opportunity outside France to see the work of a new generation of French painters. All of the work was figurative, but with a range of styles. Sans wrote in the catalogue that the painters’ ‘diversity of approach allows us to gauge the eclecticism which is symptomatic of this new French painting and to give an account of it.’

The exhibition toured Riverside Studios and Gimpel Fils (London), Museum of Modern Art (Oxford) and John Hansard Gallery (Southampton), before showing at The Fruitmarket Gallery.

The exhibition catalogue (published by the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford) includes texts by Marco Livingstone, Jérôme Sans, Xavier Girard, Jean-Louis Froment, Rémi Blanchard, Francois Boisrond, Robert Combas, Bruno Foucart, Bernard Frize, Bernard Blistene, Bernard Ceylon, Jean-Hubert Martin and Loïc Malle. It is available at the National Library of Scotland. Click here for details
