Katie Paterson: First There is a Mountain
First There is a Mountain connects world mountains to the smallest grains of sand. The artwork invites people to slow down and consider the interconnectedness of the world, from shifting coastlines across millennia, to our own eroding coastline.
Paterson has created a set of buckets in the form of world mountains, which we will use to build sand mountain ranges across Portobello Beach. Each pail is a scale model of one of five mountains: Mount Kilimanjaro (Africa), Mount Shasta (N. America), Mount Fuji (Asia), Stromboli (Europe), and Uluru (Oceania), nested together in a set.
Choreographed over the period of daylight saving time during British Summer Time, from 31.03.19–27.10.19, the artwork toured to twenty-five high profile coastal art organisations around the UK.
