This was a Scottish Arts Council exhibition chosen by Scottish painter John (‘Jack’) Knox. In the catalogue that accompanied the exhibition, Knox emphasised that the artists selected were ‘in no sense a group’, but had in common that they were ‘in the 25 – 35 age group and were all born in Scotland and studied in Scottish art schools’. The exhibition was seen as an opportunity to demonstrate that, as Knox put it, ‘the social and artistic climate here in Scotland could provide the vigorous and stimulating environment in which the artist can work’.

This was the second exhibition at the newly opened Fruitmarket, which occupied the ground floor of its current site on Market Street. Upstairs were the New 57 Gallery and Edinburgh Printmakers. Robert Breen, the Exhibitions Officer at the Scottish Arts Council at the time, wrote of his confidence that ‘this exhibition and the opening of the Fruit Market Gallery will successfully contribute to the growing confidence of artists working in Scotland.’

The catalogue for this exhibition takes the form of a spiral-bound publication printed on brown paper. It is available to consult at the National Library of Scotland. Click here for details
