The Fruitmarket was founded in 1974. Our online archive dates back to this time and includes exhibition details, installation images, downloadable documents, videos, and links to places where you can find out more information. We are digitising and adding information all the time to enrich this historical repository. Archive room and Library
With our redevelopment in 2021, we opened a dedicated room which allows us to hold some of our physical archival materials onsite and offer space for studying them. These materials are by no means a complete record of our exhibition history, and they have survived damp, fire and periods of institutional neglect. While the Fruitmarket was founded in 1974, the materials we hold date from the beginning of the directorship of Mark Francis in 1984. They include curatorial notes, press releases, press cuttings, leaflets, posters, slides, photographs and so on. Our ongoing cataloguing process means we are constantly discovering things. We welcome researchers to be part of this process of discovery.
We also have a small curatorial library available by appointment. Visit our library catalogue to browse our holdings.
If you have any specific questions about past exhibitions or would like to make an appointment to explore materials in the Archive room, please contact our Research and Public Engagement Curator, research@fruitmarket.co.uk. Please read our guidelines in advance of your visit.
