Product Description

Massimo Bartolini, Studio Matters +1

Massimo Bartolini (b.1962, Cecina, Italy) makes sculptures and large-scale immersive installations that change space and our experience of it. Although his work encompasses other media such as photography, drawing and performance, this books presents two installation works and a selection of small ‘studioworks’ made between 1944 and 2012, mostly in the last decade.

This book looks at La strada di sotto (The Street Below), 2011 made from a field of coloured lights of the kind used during street celebrations in Sicily. The work is activated by the approach of the viewer, at which point the lights being to glow in response to the voice featured in the film in an adjoining room. Organi (Organs), 2008-2013 on show at S.M.A.K. Ghent in a complementary and overlapping exhbition with The Fruitmarket Gallery is also included. Most of the book features full colour images and descriptions of Bartolini’s small ‘studio works’, created by Bartolini in order to help him think and work through ideas as he makes them. Never shown before, and included here for the first time, they are sculptures, drawings and photographs incorporating or responding to everyday objects, unusual found objects and elements of chance.

This publication is made in collaboration with S.M.A.K. Ghent and published by Roma Publications, Amsterdam.

Contents include an introduction from Fiona Bradley, Director of The Fruitmarket Gallery and Phillipe Van Cauteren, Director of S.M.A.K. Ghent, and an extended conversation between both gallery directors and Massimo Bartolini in the artist’s studio in 2012.
