Callum Innes From Memory

A major monograph produced in close collaboration with the artist to accompany and expand on his recent show here at The Fruitmarket Gallery Callum Innes is known for paintings created through a process that involves the repeated removal as well as application of paint. Calm and authoritative when exhibited, they nevertheless bear the traces of the controlled chaos of their production, of the creative and destructive interaction of pain and turpentine. This publication brings together the major themes and preoccupations of Innes’s practice over the last fifteen years. It includes essays by Michael Auping, Fiona Bradley, Eric de Chassey and Richard Cork, and a substantial new interview with the artist by Paul Bonaventura. Lavishly illustrated, the book offers the first opportunity properly to trace the evolution and inter-dependence of the various series of paintings into which Callum Innes’s practice is divided, from the earliest to the most recent paintings.
