Product Description

Air Iomlaid

This book was produced to accompany an exhibition of work produced by the sixty children involved in The Fruitmarket Gallery’s ambitious education project Air Iomlaid (On Exchange). Conceived by artist Julie Brook and The Fruitmarket Gallery’s Children and Young People’s Programme Manager Johnny Gailey, and funded by the Scottish Arts Council’s Inspire Fund, Bòrd Na Gàidhlig and Scottish Natural Heritage, the 18 month-long project was conducted through Gaelic and involved pupils from Bun-sgoil Shlèite, Skye and Tollcross Primary School, Edinburgh. Inspired by a process successfully devised and developed by Julie Brook, the children learned to look, draw and paint in the urban and rural landscapes of Edinburgh and Skye, developing their relationship with and response to their own environment and that of their partners on an exchange. The results are the stunning individual sketchbooks, drawings and paintings, and the collaborative large-scale artworks that are brought together in the exhibition and illustrated here.

Published by The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh features new texts by Fiona Bradley, Johnny Gailey and an interview with lead artist Julie Brook. All texts are in English and Gaelic.
