
After-images: On Ghost Story and other recent works
Declan Long (Course Coordinator, MA Art in the Contemporary World, National College of Art and Design, Dublin) considers recent developments in Doherty’s work, particularly its relation to the changing society of post-Troubles Northern Ireland and to important tendencies in international contemporary art.

Alison Rowley (Senior Lecturer in History and Theory of Art, School of Art and Design, University of Ulster) talks about Doherty’s recent series of photographs and explores the implications of Doherty’s decision to use black-and-white photography to set up a productive resonance between the politics of Belfast’s past and present built environment, raising questions about plans for the city’s future.

Pauline Hadaway (Director of Belfast Exposed) talks about the development of the gallery in the context of the city’s particular historical experience, exploring tensions between political engagement, community and autonomy.

Jean Fisher (Tutor, Royal College of Art, Professor of Fine Art and Transcultural Studies, Middlesex University) investigates Doherty’s practice in light of international contemporary art and postcoloniality.

Willie Doherty and Seamus McGarvey in conversation
Programmed as part of the Edinburgh International Film Festival, and taking place at Filmhouse. Willie Doherty will be in conversation with award-winning cinematographer, Seamus McGarvey (Atonement, The Hours). Doherty’s collaborator on several of his films. A screening of Willie’s film Ghost Story will be followed by an onstage discussion of Doherty’s working practice and the meanings inherent in his poetic, quietly provocative work, which circles the emotional and cultural legacy of the Troubles.

Film-maker Douglas Flockhart leads a practical workshop, providing an opportunity for participants collectively to shoot and edit a short film exploring themes such as past histories, fear and conflict, taking inspiration from the current exhibition.

A series of one-hour workshops giving young people the chance to develop their group working skills. Groups will discuss their response to the work, touching on issues of territory and sectarianism. Workshops are offered to youth groups in flexible evening slots.

The Fruitmarket Gallery education programme offers groups and individuals a range of innovative ways to get involved with contemporary art. Each exhibition is given additional meaning and context through a range of interpretation materials.
Information Assistants are present during each exhibition to provide
free tours and to answer questions about the themes explored in the work.
Short Exhibition Films are produced by Brian Ross for each exhibition.
Featuring interviews with artists and curators, they are shown in the reading
room and are available on DVD priced £15 from the bookshop. Complimentary
copies are available to schools through the Opt in for Art programme.
Opt in for Art offers free supported Gallery visits for school and youth groups
including assistance with transport, tailored activities and a resource pack.
Group Bookings Community groups, universities and colleges can book free group tours.
Visits based on the current exhibition can be tailored to your groups needs.
