Opt in for Art, Children and Young Peoples Programme

Opt in for Art is The Fruitmarket Gallery’s education programme which encourages children and young people aged 7–18 to engage with contemporary art and take advantage of the potential of the exhibitions as a resource for stimulating learning. The Gallery works with a range of groups and agencies to deliver Opt in for Art including the youth work sector to provide effective services for young people; teachers and cultural coordinators to provide creative learning opportunities for primary and secondary schools.

Opt in for Art provides access to supported Gallery visits, a schools programme, young peoples workshops, outreach projects and web-based resources.

Supported Gallery Visits

School and youth groups are encouraged to visit and respond to exhibitions. Visits are tailored to each group, led by The Fruitmarket Gallery’s staff and supported by resource material to use in the classroom.

Schools Programme

During one exhibition a year the Gallery devises a dedicated programme of gallery visits and follow up artists led workshops for Primary Schools.

The Gallery also programmes a Secondary School residency each year, which involves artists working with pupils in school, to help schools deliver the Curriculum for Excellence. The Gallery can work in collaboration with Cultural Coordinators to target schools to participate in gallery based education projects.

The Gallery will add Cultural Co-ordinators and Schools to our free mailing list to receive regular information. To join the schools mailing list please email Johnny Gailey optinforart@fruitmarket.co.uk

Workshops and Outreach Projects

Opt in for Art includes an exciting and challenging programme of practical workshops for young people. Freelance artists lead themed practical workshop sessions based on The Fruitmarket Gallery exhibitions for young people during each exhibition.

The Gallery also works in collaboration with Youth Groups, by organising group visits to exhibitions with follow up workshops, which can lead to specifically designed youth arts projects delivered in the community.

Web based resources

Resources such as exhibition guides, podcasts of artists’ talks and film clips are available online for the benefit of primary and secondary schools throughout Scotland.
