
Education programme
The Fruitmarket Gallery’s education programme creates innovative and accessible education activities and projects for diverse audiences. The education programme aims to encourage discussion about, and engagement with, contemporary art, providing a context for exhibited work and enabling a variety of groups and individuals to experience high quality art events, facilitated by Scottish and International artists, academics, writers and speakers.
Interpretation
The Fruitmarket Gallery provides a range of interpretative material, to extend the meaning and context of exhibitions. Gallery Information Assistants are available daily to answer questions about the themes explored in the work. A free exhibition guide is available during each exhibition, which is available in standard format, large print and e-mail. Short exhibition films are produced featuring interviews with artists and curators. These are shown in the resource room. The resource room also includes a range of publications and previously published texts on the exhibiting artists.
Talks and Events
A programme of talks and events are delivered during each exhibition. Recordings of talks are available to download from the resources section of the website.
Seminars
Two seminars are programmed each year, promoting critical debate on a variety of subjects relating to contemporary visual art and cultural issues.
Adult Workshops
The adult workshop programme offers participants an opportunity to try out specific processes using a variety of materials relating to work in the Gallery’s exhibitions.
Ways of Seeing Gallery Tours for 60+
During each exhibition the Gallery delivers the ‘Ways of Seeing’ gallery tours for visitors over 60. There is no charge and refreshments are provided. No previous experience of art is necessary to participate.
Opt in for Art, Children and Young Peoples Programme
Opt in for Art is The Fruitmarket Gallery’s education programme, which encourages children and young people aged 7–18, to engage with contemporary art. During one exhibition a year the Gallery devises a dedicated programme of Primary Schools gallery visits with a complementary programme of follow up artist’s led workshops. A Secondary School residency is also delivered each year. Free practical workshops for young people are delivered during each exhibition and the Gallery also work in collaboration with Youth Groups to organise group visits to exhibitions with follow up workshops.

Education events at The Fruitmarket Gallery are free except for seminars where there is a nominal charge for tickets.
